Julie. I just read another very interesting and informative Friendly Fire.
I guess Woman Hear Her Roar never got the message that when you pump gas, you touch the HANDLE, not the nozzle. When you plug in your electric vehicle, do you get a shock? If not, why would anyone get dirty hands pumping gas? It's one of the small side benefits I acquired by escaping from NJ and moving to FL. I no longer have to wait for an attendant to stop blabbing on his phone in some unintelligible language, put in the nozzle, and then disappear for a while, usually a long while, after the pump clicks off.
Anyway, don't worry. These bills come up every few years to distract the simple-minded NJ voters from really important issues, such as property taxes.
Florida man's beer budget is about to endure dire impacts. Why would people from Europe and other nations want to come here and deal with the threat of harassment from US immigration? Rest assured that the right wing echo chamber will find someone to blame their misfortune on.
There’s a vital aspect to the withdrawal of foreigners that I think most Americans miss, especially his supporters: All European countries teach, memorialize, and remember World War I and World War II. Americans are so nonchalant about their history. However, Europeans are not. They’ve experienced fascism up close and personal. Americans would be shocked at the European curriculum in general and how focused it is on the past mistake mistakes. In what would be the equivalent of US sixth grade, I had to read The Gathering Storm as homework, and we were expected to comprehend it! I noticed not a single parent was complaining to the teacher that the book was someone 1000 pages.
"The message Trump has sent the world is that he is building a fortress around the nation and that he disdains them." Yes, but absolutely no surprise there. He openly ran on a "America First" campaign (Google "Lindbergh"), making no secret that he had no use for the rest of the world. His supporters have always hated "foreigners" (or more correctly, ferriners)," since, perhaps "undocumented immigrants" aside, those foreigners have more education and more money than they do.
Anyway, welcome to the Sunshine State! I escaped to down here from NJ last November. I live in Sarasota, which, together with Tampa-St. Pete and Miami constitute the "liberal" sections of the state. Much like a Republican living in Ocean County NJ!
Regarding amusement parks, remember when you were young (and I was younger), Woody Allen saying "cocaine is nature's way of telling you you have too much money"? Nowadays, substitute "Orlando Theme Parks!
As for tRump's base, I'm sure they all made out fine in the market last week, foregoing buying eggs and instead buying Apples and other tech stocks! D's can't complain about "insider trading," since the Pelosi's made $millions that way over the years.
I supported Hillary even though Obama was on the move mainly because my dream was a woman POTUS. It was never meant to be for her though. She had too much baggage in part courtesy of the republicans, Bill, and all the rest. I was hopeful in ‘16 for her too. I woke up in the middle of the night having gone to bed knowing things looked bad. I saw the CNN banner saying Trump had won and screamed no,no, no!!! She almost had it though had stupid Comey not butted in at the 11th hour. So funny on Fetterman. As a woman who appreciates style I’m thinking for God’s sake can you please at least put on some slacks and a nice shirt? I think some brain damage going on there. Realistically it’s probably a Gavin type. He’s been running in the shadows for years and he looks the part. Good looking with the partly grey full head of hair. There are some very provocative photos of he and ex Kimberly when he was in charge before. He can run them to build his buzz. He and Kimberly very in with Kamala back then too. Americans are celebrity oriented so Gavin fits the bill better than most. Sad NY Magazine and Page 6 is the standard but it is.
We’ll see how long it takes before America will accept a woman POTUS. I’m not overly optimistic it will happen anytime soon. I fully expect our next nominee to be a white man. I’m just hoping it’s not Gavin Newson. I’m sure various pet peeves played some roll in what happened. The Michigan Congress woman who went out of her way to encourage Muslim voters to not support the democratic candidate was very unhelpful as an example. The Democratic Party is large and diverse. Everyone can’t have their way and then pick up their marbles and stomp off home if they don’t get their way. Republicans march in lockstep. It’s not the Democrat’s nature but in this case it might not be a bad idea to take that page from their book. We can’t all be pleased and more than anything we can’t stay home or waste a vote on a 3rd party spoiler if we hope to win.
Ironically, the best chance that the D's had of electing a (white) woman was 2008, when virtually anybody, including Hilliam, could have beaten McCain.
As for nominating an "evil" (must always remember that adjective) white man, how about Fetterman? He'd look great taking the Oath wearing that hooded sweatshirt! Then, he could yell at himself for not dressing appropriately in the Oval Office!
lol Kenneth on the Lawerence of Arabia comment. One comfort is the majority of the American public was not in favor of pardoning these 1/6 scum bags and those who did were Trump’s cultists. Harry Dunn is an example of how most Americans support the cops who fought these barbarians. I sometimes visit his SubStack and he has a massive following. Meanwhile not long ago CNN had a piece on a cultist woman who was building a retreat for the 1/6 pardoned. Her “reasoning” was they needed a peaceful place to recover from their false imprisonment. We’ve got sane and insane. We have to hope the sane prevail.
"We’ve got sane and insane. We have to hope the sane prevail."
Have they ever? Not to flog a deceased equine, but look who the D's nominated for president! Both parties are ruled by the insane; at least one doesn't attack public buildings.
I was totally fine with Kamala as most progressive women were. I hoped to see a woman POTUS in my lifetime. What I and others failed to appreciate was our society was unwilling to vote for a woman POTUS, any woman, let alone a mixed race non white one. It was a crushing realization for many of us. Clearly we haven’t caught up with the rest of 1st world countries in this way. I know for sure we’d all be able to sleep at night had Kamala won. The truth is she almost made it had it not been for Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. A few more votes in those states would have spared us Trump. He doesn’t have some overwhelming mandate no matter how he likes to crow that he does. He barely made it.
No need to refight that now, but she didn't lose because she was a woman. She lost because she was never nominated and many independents resented that fact. And she ran a poor campaign which was not he fault, because she had virtually no time to plan it.
The US will elect a woman president--as most other countries already have (or PM; whatever)--when they're not being told that they HAVE to just because she's a woman.
I’ve always thought jealousy played a role in the hard core Trump cultist support of him. Look at the people who attend his moronic rallies. I’m making a judgement call but they don’t look like the sharpest tools in the shed. A whole lot of testosterone laden younger men who think they should be getting paid a truck load of money without an education or marketable job skills. Plenty of others who long for a 1950’s style America are also there. Trump has repeatedly said the uneducated are his favorite. Sadly America has a lot of people with no critical thinking skills and very limited education. He knows they are the least likely to question anything he says. The divides in society have always existed but no one has taken advantage of them and made them worse than Trump. He’s a cancer on our society and as far as I’m concerned the entire MAGA movement and everyone connected to it has to be destroyed by the end of this war we’re in to save our country and democracy. It’s our only hope.
One again, it is critical to recall HL Mencken: "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the American public." The same type of people have always been in the majority and have always been susceptible to manipulation; you don't think that the Civil War was fought by plantation owners, do you?
I'm not sure that "destroyed" is the most appropriate solution, seeing as how they've got the guns. But once tRump's policies really kick in, they won't have enough money to buy ammunition or gas for their pickups. Once they realize that prices on everything they buy are skyrocketing, and that factories aren't springing up with $50/hour union jobs with no skills and no education, they will begin to cool off. And despite what he says, tRump knows that a third term is unattainable. Vance might think he can "carry on," but ironicall, the "hillbilly" has too much education to pull off "tRump II." Now, will the D's be able to find a candidate that makes "lesser of two evils" an impossible choice?
I guess we’ll see on a democratic candidate but we do have a good stable of viable options unlike the republicans who have none. Vance has about as much personality as a cardboard box. I don’t see anyone getting overly excited about him. The MAGAS are all about Trump and without him on a ballot a lot of these cultists won’t even vote. A lot of them were non voters before Trump slithered on the scene and without their dear leader many will just crawl back under their rocks. The crazy MAGA lawmakers are just making money off of riding on the Trump bandwagon and hopefully are either sidelined or sent packing by voters once he’s gone. I do see a wrinkle and possible issue with the insane 3rd term idea though. Trump plants seeds and he always does it by saying someone said or people are saying. He acts like it’s the first he’s heard of such a thing too. Then he repeats the 3rd term lie over and over and it becomes truth to the dummies that support him. He did the same thing with the stolen election lie. It’s not out of the realm that when he is prevented from a 3rd term run he’ll cry stolen yet again. A sequel to 1/6 coming down the pike? I could see it. He could also try to be a shadow POTUS while he finds a way to prop Vance up and then actually run the show. None of it is a pleasant thought but nothing can be put past Trump. He’s capable of anything.
A repeat of January 6 is possible, since the perpetrators might count on a future R president pardoning them. I would hope that the individual in charge of Capitol security would channel Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia:

I haven't noticed any comments about the firing of Col. Susan Meyers, commander of the Greenland Space Forces base (sorry if I may have missed any).
Anybody have any thoughts?
Thank you for your tireless work. Please stay safe.
Brilliant sharply on point powerful analyses/commentary.
Thank you Julie Roginski.

Americans are so clueless and so many ways.
