'...consumers who are increasingly tuning out...' Until they acknowledge their won failed reporting, they will not get watchers or readers. Too many years of 'but Trump' reasoning has doomed their existence
Just a reminder that owners and executives are not representative of those who work under them. If we are talking about journalism/the news media (of which cable and social media are not) then we are talking about a battle as old as America. As I mentioned to you, Hearst in the 30s actually paid Hitler to write in his 18 American papers. Trust me when I say his American journalists did not agree. Bad actors who own press take over the opinion sections first.
When they feel more emboldened, they then try to stymie publishing truth. But the good news is, reporters usually win these fights to publish. Which is why we know about Watergate, Opiods, Black Lung, Priests, Panama Papers, and Trump everything - to name a few.
The Fourth Estate is under attack. It was the first institution Trump went after 10 years ago. Let’s not aid him in his quest to destroy this essential institution. #SubscribeandSupport
I totally agree with your first sentence, but I question "reporters usually win these fights to publish." The only reason that we learned about Watergate was because the Washington Post publisher, Katharine Graham, stood firmly behind her journalists and editors. To the point that AG John Mitchell said that "Katy Graham is going to get her t**s in a wringer!" That was then; now, ownership is by MBA "equity fund" criminals who know or care nothing about journalism. Profit is everything. What happened at CBS is proof of that; will others at other networks have the courage to put their careers and livelihoods at risk?
Good point about Watergate. She was a good one. But there are endless other examples of investigations leading to exposure and accountability by our journalists. Did you ever watch the movie The Insider? That’s a great example of a reporter/producer throwing themselves on the sword to get out the truth to the American public that cigarette manufacturers were adding toxic chemicals to exponentially increase addiction. He quit the show and gave the story to the Times, just so we would know. The Times even won his Pulitzer. I started as a journalist and worked at papers and CBS network for years, and what I know is these people reporting for us have the highest of standards and ethics. They are my heroes. They also put their lives on the line bringing us reporting from war torn countries like Ukraine. More journalists died in 2024 than any previous year. So be kind, and remember they are working for little for you. They are not the “enemy of the people.”
So much of this is of their own doing. On the surface, normalizing Trump and being overly critical of Hillary and Biden because the former don't generate the clicks and easy stories Trump churns out by the bushelful daily. But looking deeper, they all played a role in dumbing down America with highly profitable reality TV and film franchises that glorify male rage, the rugged individualist, and the white savior (every Marvel movie ever with one exception). Even kiddie fare -- like Disney Channel shows where the leads are either celebrities or spies and the adults are complete dolts if existent at all. They set Mike Judge's Idiocracy into motion a good 500 years before the film predicted it. Most adults today are too stupid and ignorant to filter content for truth or accuracy, instead, just giving into their most basic urges for retribution and dominance with blind faith MAGA support (see how most snacks, beers, WWE events, monster truck rallies, male performance pills, etc. are marketed to these people).
Well stated, Ms. Roginsky. Corporations that bent the knee, which ironically spells maga (meta, apple, google, and amazon), plus disney, comcast, and many others are in 47’s cross hairs. These bastions of running to constant favorable winds instead of making a principled stand shows the corporate media and corporate social media model is a money loser.
The corporate media was not afraid of Harris, didn’t report the truth, gaslit the American public and they actively supported 47, and boohoo if 47 is going after the same supplicants. May corporate media bleed a slow, painful financial death. 47 has instructed his pals not to cover today’s Throne speech by Charles.
You neglected to include CBS, which obviously tried to muzzle 60 Minutes and the entire news department, both of whose heads subsequently resigned, due to concerns about a pending merger.
Settling nuisance lawsuits is nothing new in our Jackpot Justice system. For a company like Disney, $15 million doesn't even register on their balance spreadsheets; it's literally Board of Directors chair loose change. Even if the "system" had provisions for "loser pays frivolous lawsuits," rRump would just get one of his Billionaire Biddies to kick in, and turn up the pressure.
However, as a news entity, they have taken on a responsibility both to the public and to the First Amendment to "defend to the death" the freedom of the press. If it means years of battling for that freedom, that's what they are supposed to be all about. But, since major media, particularly the networks, are run by MBA's and not journalists, the only (very painful) solution is for the reputable journalists to resign. Sure, it's easy for me to say, but why would they have dedicated their lives and careers to freedom of the press if they are not going to take the painful consequences of upholding it?
What none of these people trying to placate Trump understand is there is never enough placation with a person like this. They might as well be abuse victims walking on eggshells hoping they can avoid the next beating. Trump is an incredibly sick individual. He’s determined at all times to erase all traces of his wrong doing. Of course he raped Carrol. Of course he forced himself on all the other women who came forward at the time to tell their stories. He wants no trace of truth about 1/6 and that is why he has brow beaten republicans to parrot his ridiculous claim that the violent riot was a love fest. It’s the reason a plaque honoring the fallen officers from that day sits in the capital basement rather than hung on a wall. The list of his white washing goes on and on and so does the list of those who are too afraid to stand up to him and speak truth. Case in point Mike Johnson who stands next to Trump with a beaten puppy look on his face because he knows he must or else. Like all the others he doesn’t understand that no one who makes bargains with a devil can ever truly be safe. If only all these people would band together and say no more but that takes courage none of them have.

There's no point in capitulation to a bully. They'll just be back for more. Best to fight them off the first time.

The republican party was about $$$.
The trump party is about POWER, because the $$$$$ is just behind.
$ = power.

the more entities bend the knee the more he is going to want. There is no placating the beast

God it’s all so sickening.
