I can understand and even appreciate the outrage over both sets of occurrences, but they are totally independent. I seriously suspect that the "understated" (yes, that is sarcasm) wedding events were planned LONG before anybody had the slightest idea what a "Big Beautiful Bill" was, let alone how the timings would juxtapose.

I also doubt that Bezos held any type of weapon to the heads of those responsible for governing Venice and forced them to accept what was undoubtedly a huge financial windfall for permitting such extravagance.

As for the blatant (disgraceful?) display of wealth, since when is that new? Thorstein Veblen coined the term "conspicuous consumption" in the 1890s to describe how the uber-rich of that era flaunted their wealth. Sure glad that rich people have reformed since then. (again, sarcasm)

Fortunately, once the NYC Democratic Socialist mayor-elect (the November election is a mere formality) takes control, all wealth will be redistributed and such excesses will be a thing of the past...at least in NYC. (and YES, that is also sarcasm)

But if the new NYC mayor doesn't "go back," how can he follow the dictates of Groucho's brother, Karl?

Yes I agree with you actually in some things. But trump is thinking of ways to deport him and Minnesota reps were assasinsted and he golfed , ak47s if and when next president wants to ban all guns trump gave him the possibility of it . When his policies are implemented people like me won’t survive trump will be able to pick and chose who lives here who to help who gets vaccinated everything under the sun writing to reps of congress and presidents since the 70s and trump since 1990s today I see drs who you can’t understand , transport drivers who don’t understand English

well i know many people want to defund everything don't want jobs , count on others to support them , support maga , trump , and buy AK47S . You need at least 2 min wage jobs to live , and no brain space used to think about trump , or know it. SEE IT EVERYDAY!

I think the NYC mayor is going to hand out free AK-47s; you get one when you board a free bus.

In my view part of what is wrong with America is its obsession with celebrity and getting rich with as little effort as possible. It’s part of what gave us Trump. Most Americans knew him well long before he came down the fake gold escalator. He was a staple of Page Six gossip dishing the dirt about his latest love interest. Millions bought his get rich quick books and got endless looks at his gaudy life style. This could be you, or you wish it could be, was the message. How many American tabloid magazines and websites gave moment by moment coverage of this obscenely vulgar Bezo’s wedding? The same is true of the celebrity studded 11 minutes in space. It was breathlessly covered by cable and regular TV networks as though these vapid women actually conquered the outer limits. They were even referred to as astronauts for God’s sake. With all their vast wealth I see no real evidence 99.9% of them are doing a thing to improve life for anyone but themselves. If anything they’ve helped spawn the deluge of young women whose idea of a career is to be an internet influencer with millions of fans. There are exceptions to these ultra rich women doing nothing of consequence with their money. Melinda Gates and the ex wife of Bezo spring to mind. No one talks about them though. It’s not sexy or interesting to a celebrity obsessed culture if they aren’t hunting for the next rich boyfriend or getting too much plastic surgery. It’s something American culture could examine but probably won’t.

Amen. It’s obscene. I was surprised at some of the people I saw shown in attendance. I feel so much ANGER, roiling around with disgust, despair and exhaustion. We have got to shut this shit down.

Pity an organized frogman sapper effort didn't affix magnet mines to Bezos' shite yacht, timed to detonate as soon as the ship left its moorings and headed for open sea. They would have been hailed as heroes, in the manner of Luigi Mangione.

A sobering column as the lives of billionaires, able to completely wall off from the rest of us, is on display. It's sad the number of celebrities who have talked but not walked a good game, while somebody like Liz Cheney (I'm sure her financial life is good), who I disagree with on virtually every political policy has integrity and has offered a blueprint for fighting back.

Not to worry! That NYC guy will get elected to the Senate next year and then president in 2028! I've got his future campaign slogan:

"A rainbow in every sky! A unicorn in every yard!"

Oprah unleashed "Doctors" Oz and Phil on America, and also platformed Rhonda Byrne, whose book "The Secret" convinced millions of people that thinking positive thoughts causes positive things to happen--a claim with zero scientific basis. As for the Kardashians, they are America's least necessary celebrities.
