The DNC is busy fighting amongst itself while the immigration issue flares and fascism advances. How hard could it be to come up with a set of principles to oppose trump?

If nothing else I hope that the visible harms being done by ICE are helping people firm up their own values on this issue. In the past i have had mixed feelings about amnesty for the undocumented (although it is hard to have solid positions on pieces of the issue in isolation), but recent events have clearly demonstrated that the vast majority of people already here should be allowed to stay and helped to become productive citizens.

I have an answer to your rhetorical question...one that nobody on this site is going to like:

Joe Biden. By not bowing out of the race in 2023 and encouraging a free and open primary season, he consigned the party to defeat. Sure, there is no guarantee that any D could have beaten tRump, but his stubbornness and ego made it a predestined outcome.

And now: GET THE HECK OUT OF THERE RIGHT NOW! Iran's certain retaliation will likely be largely ineffective, but it only takes one to do damage.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda. We’re way past playing this non-productive game. You can blame Biden, but the fact is, 90m registered voters didn’t bother to show up and racism and misogyny still exist. A brown woman was just too much for the U.S.

Julie posed a rhetorical question, I gave an answer.

As for voter turnout, it was 57.8% of the voting age population. Except for 2020 (62.8%) and 2008 (58.3%), that was the highest since 1968 (you may have read about what was going on at that time). If you wish to continue the "victim" mantra by claiming that the 2024 D candidate received 6 million fewer votes than the 2020 D, go right ahead. And then rationalize why that same individual as vp got so many more votes in 2020.

Maybe, just perhaps maybe, it wasn't the "color" of the candidate...just the candidate!

I think the bigger question at this moment is why in God’s name are not millions more Americans who hate the cruelty immigrants are being treated with not taking to the streets with the rest of us? This is the time for it if they previously were just sitting back waiting for lawmakers to rescue us. Many Dem lawmakers are trying but all of us have to lock arms and say no more. We’re right on the cusp of no turning back from the authoritarian take over. There are more of us than them, hundreds of million more. We have to all stand up and fight this. We the people are the only ones who can win this war for our democracy and way of life and we need more Americans to wake up and fight with us.

Appreciate your courage and honesty, Julie. It would be nice to have a strong Dem leader, but it takes steadiness to master this moment, and no one of stature has yet shown it. Trump, Miller et al are consistent with their clear, if repulsive, message of hate. There is no consistency coming from the Dems. It doesn’t have to be loud or clever, but it does have to be simple, clear and morally unmovable. In keeping with your theme of the Sermon on the Mount, Who is going to preach love so winningly that people will start to believe it can overcome hate?

Julie is so right. In the civil rights movements, many leaders acknowledged their weaknesses. To be as effective as possible, the D's need to address critical vulnerabilities. While investing in attracting young men is vital, equal focus is needed on core issues where the party appears "impotent," specifically immigration and gender identity in sports. The current perception, fueled by Republican narratives, is that Democrats broadly support "Medicaid for undocumented immigrants" and "trans participation in women's sports." Ads were run in Iowa and continue to be used as talking points.

This branding is damaging. Democrats must proactively define their stances on these issues. A clear, unified position, perhaps coalescing around a comprehensive immigration framework like the Gallego-style Senate bill (even if previously unsuccessful), is imperative. Until Democrats articulate and defend their own nuanced positions, rather than allowing Republicans to define them, these wedge issues will continue to be exploited in every election cycle, from national to local races.
