Jake (he is not alone) has become quite complacent and not push back more to the bullshit he is often fed. By little Mickey's logic, it is ok if the corruption is taking place out in the open. So they have no responsibility for being corrupt, because they are not hiding it and that there are others that should be intervening if they are being corrupt.

Typical republican adolescent logic !

Thanks for writing this second piece. Jake is afraid of pushing back on clear lies or, at best, dodges. As you suggested, he could have at least shown backbone by ending the interview. I can't imagine Walter Cronkite acting as if he's seeking Johnson's approval.

When a journalist turns into interviewee, they need to be pulled from the air. Jake Tapper needs to understand that his role is in jeopardy. We need to hold journalists accountable.

When Johnson said he knew nothing about the crypto dinner, Tapper should have said, “I just told you, what’s your opinion?”

As soon as Johnson strayed off topic to Hunter or Biden, Jake should have thanked him and said hope to see you when you catch up on current events and cut the mike.

And now, for a little Memorial Day tension-breaker:

Tampa is one of about 3 places in FL where there won't be any goose-stepping in any Memorial Day parades, and the Times is a liberal-leaning paper. But they always assemble a good mix of political cartoons.

Journalists are supposed to be truth seekers so they can transmit the truth to the rest of us. They are not to sit politely and listen to lies without any challenge. Furthermore, where is the media when it comes to shining a big spotlight on the insane speech the Commander and Chief of the US military delivered yesterday at the West Point graduation? There should be wall to wall coverage questioning Trump’s mental competence just as they mercilessly covered Biden’s and are further humiliating him now. We have a mentally incompetent, diminished, and insane POTUS who shows up at a graduation of young men about to serve in our military in a red MAGA hat and then proceeds to discuss trophy wives among other off point and inappropriate subjects. All of them about him of course. Excuses about Trump being Trump got old years ago. With each passing day I’m becoming more outraged by our print and cable media. They need to do their jobs period.

It’s not that Tapper can claim to be blindsided by the reaction. Dude is laughing all the way to his Trump-size bank account

Honestly, I cannot stomach watching the clip, but I so appreciate your calling out this example of sell-out corporate media. Thank you for your courageous and honest voice in this fight! (From a new subscriber who just discovered your substack this month.)

Julie, thank you for speaking truth to power.

Both media and politicians share a dangerous susceptibility to the "drug of fame" and "addiction to power." Just as politicians crave validation and influence, media seeks clicks and virality, especially online. This leads to sensationalism over substance, prioritizing catchy headlines and inflammatory rhetoric over factual reporting. They might chase trends instead of investigating crucial issues, mirroring politicians who follow polls rather than lead. Julie Roginsky, among others, like Mark Jacob or Margaret Sullivan, has written a newsworthy critique.

Individual journalists can become celebrities, their personal brand outweighing objective reporting, much like politicians building a cult of personality. This quest for engagement creating echo chambers, reinforcing biases and polarizing public discourse.

The constant "dopamine hit" of TV viewership, or likes and shares can be addictive, pushing media to produce content for strong reactions, even if misinformed. Ultimately, when visibility becomes the goal, both media and politicians distort their core public functions, compromising truth and trust.

Billionaires can easily control politicians, but it takes some hidden tricks to hide corporate compliance. It's why I've always called it Masked Media.
