Trump wants the United States to suffer. It’s not even debatable.
He is making the country sicker.
Why else would he cut federal funding for cancer research? Cancer is projected to kill over 600,000 Americans this year. Scientists are getting close to a cure for some common cancers. Now, that research will be stalled at best and scrapped at worst.
Why else would he gut programs that combat opioid overdoses?
Why else would he cut funding for Alzheimer’s research? Between 2000 and 2019, deaths from Alzheimer’s Disease increased more than 145%.
Why else would he cut billions in grants to states that were being used to track infectious diseases, mental health services and addiction treatment? This has led to devastating effects already. In Lubbock, Texas, efforts to combat a measles outbreak have been halted and in West Virginia, Michigan and Tennessee, the funding cuts have affected mental health and substance abuse services. (All four states voted for Trump in 2024.)
Why else would he arrest and detain the only person in the world who can read advance computer scripts that shed light on cancer detection and research into longevity?
Why else would he cut off data access for the very scientists who are racing to stop the spread of the bird flu, even as it poses a threat that would make the COVID pandemic look like a garden party?
Why else would he gut food safety quality checks and other testing, which poses an unacceptable risk to the nation’s food supply?
Why else would he drastically slow down the approval of life-saving vaccines?
Why else would he threaten the survival of Meals on Wheels, which is a lifeline for aging and disabled Americans?
And so on.
He is making the country poorer.
Why else would he impose tariffs without first negotiating with his counterparties to soften the blow, policies that will lead to empty shelves and higher prices as early as this month?
Why else would he destroy the middle class? Nearly half of all Americans are employed by small businesses. Over the last twenty-five years, small businesses have created more than 60% of all American jobs. Unlike their large counterparts, these businesses will be unable to absorb the shock of Trump’s tariffs. The ensuing calamity for workers will soon be upon us.
Why else would he tell Americans that their kids would “maybe have two dolls instead of thirty” for Christmas and that “maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally?”
Why else would he make investors flee American treasuries, which have been a safe haven in times of market turmoil?
Why else would he weaken the dollar by trashing his own handpicked chairman of the Federal Reserve?
Why else would he actively work to cause stagflation for the first time in nearly fifty years?
Why else would he impose policies that most analysts agree will lead to a deep recession?
And so on.
He is making the country dumber.
Why else is he weaponizing DEI to rid the government and academia of experts?
Why else is he waging a full assault against American institutions of higher learning?
Why else is he gutting grants that have funded everything from pandemic protection, to better medical devices, to tech startups?
Why else would he purge data experts who study everything from childhood to maternal mortality?
Why else would he cut critical funding for scientists and others who have made American academia the envy of the world?
Why else would he fire experts and replace them with frauds who push discredited scientific theories?
Why else would he support state efforts to teach school children discredited theories about American history?
And so on.
He is making the country weaker
Why else would he actively work to destroy the Pax Americana?
Why else would he place unqualified stooges in the highest positions of power, who knowingly expose the nation’s secrets to our enemies?
Why else would he initiate devastating personnel cuts at our intelligence agencies, including at the CIA and the National Security Agency?
Why else would he retreat from international relief efforts, allowing China and other U.S. adversaries to fill the void to create a Pax Sinica?
Why else would he so terrify our allies that many of them are urging their citizens to avoid travel to the United States?
Why else would he threaten territorial expansion against our NATO partners?
Why else would he allow members of his administration to trash the domestic policies of our friends, while rewarding the genocidal behavior of our erstwhile enemies?
Why else would he cut over $1 billion from the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms?
Why else would he shut down the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, whose mission is to dismantle transnational organized crime networks, drug cartels and human trafficking rings?
And so on.
None of this would make sense if a true patriot were in the Oval Office. Which begs the question: why is Trump doing this?
There’s a good reason for the destruction that Trump has unleashed on every element of American society in just over 100 days. And it’s darker than you think.
