Republicans Don't Intend to Have Free and Fair Elections Again

Republicans certainly aren’t acting like they intend to run in free and fair elections ever again. I don’t mean only that they plan to subvert the 22nd Amendment and nominate Donald Trump for an unconstitutional third term — although they are going to do that too.

I mean, they are not acting like people who are worried that in our nearly 250-year-long democracy, the pendulum eventually always swings to the other party. What may be unified Republican government now may result in a landslide for Democrats in 2026 and 2028. This is why elected officials have never gone too far in using the levers of power at their disposal to savage their opponents. The shoe will soon be on the other foot.

But not now. Since Trump’s return to office, Republicans have allowed him to act like a tyrant who knows he is never leaving. Take the last few weeks alone and don’t let a failure of imagination lull you into a false sense that this too shall pass in four years:
