Programming Alert: At 7 PM ET tonight,
and I are doing a Substack Live for women who just want to dish about everything that’s going on in our lives. This is not the usual political show but more for all of us women of a certain age (and the men who love us) to just spill the tea on cultural issues and what it’s like living in the sandwich generation where parents, kids, work and a thousand different priorities are pulling us all in different directions. Between the controversy over Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill, the continued confusion over the future of Iran’s nuclear program, a renewed trade war with our largest trading partner and the demise of federal jurisprudence at the hands of Trump’s Supreme Court appointees, there is a lot going on this week.
But not for The New York Times, which decided to run a story on Sunday’s landing page titled: Should (or Could) Trump Be Added to Mount Rushmore?
Here’s the upshot: No, he shouldn't and no he can’t, because of risk to collapsing the existing edifice, according to geologists. But inadvertently, this article is the perfect metaphor for Trump’s governance. Regardless of what the experts say, Trump can order the federal government to begin carving his face on the side of Mount Rushmore, even if destroys the mountain and the years of painstaking work and history that went into its design.
Wrecking our norms and established historic precedent has been a way of life for Trump. Why not destroy Mount Rushmore on the way to destroying the republic, just shy of the 250 anniversary of its founding?
“When you buy apples, when you buy bacon, when you buy eggs, they would double and triple the price over a short period of time, and I won an election based on that. We're going to bring those prices way down." - Donald Trump, Meet the Press, December 8, 2024.
Below is the most recently available national data on the average price of apples, bacon, and eggs. It’s been five months and those prices are not “way down.” In fact, they are all way up.
Apples (Honeycrisp, per pound): $2.99 (up from $2.31 when Biden left office and up from $1.85 this time last year)
Bacon (sliced, per pound): $6.985 (May, 2025, up from $6.915 in December, 2024, which was Biden’s last full month in office)
Eggs (Grade A, Large, per dozen): $4.55 (May, 2025, up from $4.15 in December, 2024, which was Biden’s last full month in office)
Salty Monday:
Whom Can We Trust To Tell Us The Truth?
We are now at war with Iran — or we aren’t, depending on which part of Donald Trump’s Sunday address to the nation you believe.
Salty Tuesday:
Where are the Democrats?
Every single day, Donald Trump provides Democrats with opposition fodder — yet our leaders in Washington are largely not meeting the moment.
Salty Wednesday:
Five Alarm Fire for Democrats
It’s the last Wednesday of the month, so I am writing over at The Banter today. I urge you to check out my column there (linked below) because it is a five alarm fire warning for the Democratic establishment. The condescension with which our leaders treat their own base needs to end. In fact, it’s time for them to learn how to fight or pass the torch altogether.
Salty Thursday:
Lessons From NYC, Trump Big Beautiful Failures, & How Democrats Can Win
Thanks to everyone who tuned into my live conversation with Frederic Poag last night about the future of the Democratic Party. We didn’t just address the problems — we also talked about solutions.
Salty Friday:
Democrats Kicked Their Predatory Bully to the Curb. Why Won't Republicans?
Little noticed in the discussion of Tuesday’s shocking New York City primary results is the decision by Democratic voters to reject a sexual predator in favor of someone who, as far as we know, does not have a history of treating anyone who dares to criticize him as an enemy to be destroyed.

What hasn’t this evil man destroyed? He destroyed people’s belief that any media could be trusted unless it agreed with him. He destroyed the belief elections were fair unless he won them. He destroyed the belief that an American POTUS represented all Americans not just his MAGA base. He destroyed the belief in all government institutions. He destroyed the true meaning of the American flag and fostered the belief it only belongs to the MAGA’s. He destroyed the belief that all races and cultures contributed to making America the great country it is. He destroyed the belief that the words on the Statue of Liberty are true and immigrants the world over are welcome in America. He destroyed the White House rose garden Jackie Kennedy gave to the American people and along with it trees past POTUS’s planted to commemorate special times in our history. The list of what this despicable excuse for a human being has destroyed could fill pages. Of course he wants his face on Mount Rushmore. He’s a legend in his own diseased mind and believes he’s the greatest man who ever walked the face of the earth. If he has to destroy the rest of Mount Rushmore to do it so be it. He hates America. He hates the American flag he hugs with that s—t eating grin on his face. He gives all Americans, including his deluded MAGA base, the middle finger with every unconstitutional executive order he signs. He’s out to destroy America and he hopes he takes all of us down along with it. I know I’m not alone when I say I’ll be damned if I’m going to stay quiet and allow him to finish the job.
TJ was initially supposed to be to the left of GW, but the rock was unstable so he was squeezed to the right, then TR was tucked in.
You are right that Rump could "order" the carving, but lawsuits would probably hold it up until at least 2029. And, if he was seriously and quietly told that any attempt to carve anything additional could destroy the mountain, he wouldn't risk his "legacy" on that. Instead, he would crow about how he "gave up" on the idea, even if it disappointed his loving fans!
